Word to PDF Conversion Not Working — Common Problems and Fixes

Most Word to PDF conversions complete without issues. But when something goes wrong — a blank PDF, a corrupt download, a file that won't upload, or a result that looks nothing like the original — there are specific reasons and specific fixes for each.

Here are the most common Word to PDF problems and exactly how to resolve them.

Problem 1: The Converted PDF Is Blank

Why it happens: The Word file contains content that the converter could not process — most often a DOCX file that was corrupted, password-protected, or generated by unusual software with non-standard formatting.

How to fix it:

  • Open the file in Microsoft Word or LibreOffice and check that content actually displays correctly
  • If the file opens fine, save it again as a fresh DOCX (File → Save As → DOCX) to strip any corruption
  • If the file is password-protected, remove the password in Word first (Review → Protect Document), then convert
  • Re-upload the freshly saved file to the converter

Problem 2: The File Won't Upload

Why it happens: File size exceeds the converter's limit, the file format is not supported, or a slow connection caused the upload to fail silently.

How to fix it:

  • Verify the file is actually a DOC or DOCX file — other formats like ODT or RTF need to be saved as DOCX first
  • If the file is very large (over 50MB), compress embedded images in Word first: go to Format → Compress Pictures and select "Email (96 ppi)"
  • Check your internet connection and try uploading again — large files on slow connections may time out
  • Try a different browser if the upload button is unresponsive

Problem 3: The PDF Download Is Corrupt or Won't Open

Why it happens: The download was interrupted before it finished, or the browser cached a partial file.

How to fix it:

  • Do not close or navigate away from the converter page while the download is in progress
  • Clear your browser cache and try the conversion again from the beginning
  • Try downloading with a different browser (Chrome, Firefox, Edge)
  • On mobile, make sure you have sufficient storage space for the downloaded file

Problem 4: The PDF Looks Different from the Word Document

Why it happens: Font substitution, content outside page margins, or complex floating elements that behave differently in PDF layout. This is covered in detail in the guide on converting Word to PDF without losing formatting.

Quick fixes:

  • Switch to standard fonts (Calibri, Arial, Times New Roman) in your Word document
  • Make sure all content is within page margins — use Print Preview in Word to check
  • Save as DOCX (not DOC) before converting

Problem 5: Word to PDF Not Working in Microsoft Word Itself

If you're trying to use Microsoft Word's built-in "Save as PDF" feature (not PDF Linx) and it's failing:

  • Update Word to the latest version — older versions have known PDF export bugs
  • Try exporting via File → Export → Create PDF/XPS instead of File → Save As
  • If Word's PDF export consistently fails, use PDF Linx as a reliable browser-based alternative — upload the DOCX file and convert without needing Word's export function at all

Problem 6: Conversion Is Very Slow

Why it happens: Very large files, many embedded high-resolution images, or high server load at peak times.

How to fix it:

  • Compress images in your Word document before uploading (Format → Compress Pictures)
  • Split a very long document into smaller sections before converting, then merge the resulting PDFs using the Merge PDF tool
  • Try at a different time if the issue seems to be server-side

Still Not Working?

If you're still having issues after trying the fixes above, there's a reliable workaround: open your DOCX file in Google Docs (upload it to Google Drive, then open with Docs) and download it as a PDF from there. Google Docs has a robust PDF export that handles most complex Word formatting correctly.

Try the conversion again — most issues are resolved with a clean file re-upload.
